The Blood Eagle torture method from the Vikings is something quite grotesque in every sense of the word. It really was a momentous and significant Viking torture method which is probably one of the most horrific ways to go, in our opinion.
If you’ve seen the TV Show Vikings, the blood eagle execution is used on a few enemies of Ragnar Lothbrok, publicly. Women, children and everybody in between gather round the unlucky soul who is destine for a blood eagle death. It’s almost a celebrated occasion, one that everybody is looking forward too and this was actually a great representation of how the Viking’s celebrated death in real life.
The Vikings believed in a spiritual heaven called Valhalla, which is why our most recent Jewellery-drop has been named after this Nordic paradise, as all the pieces are Viking-inspired. They believed that everyone should welcome death when their time was up because the Gods, friends and family were waiting to drink with them.
However, whether you welcomed death or not, this is absolutely no way to meet the Gods, or whatever is up there at the pearly gates. If you’ve seen the Vikings Blood Eagle episode, you’ll know that Ragnar carries out this grisly, cruel ritual on Jarl Borg for betraying him. You might of looked away at that point, you might want to click away and feast your eyes on something less vulgar, like our jewellery, at this point. www.obsidiannaccessories.com/shop - if you do.
Are you ready for the gruesome bit?
A Blood Eagle execution would first consist of tying the victim’s limbs, arms and legs, together to prevent a last-minute attempt of an escape or any sudden movements. Then, the perpetrator of the Blood Eagle would slice the victim from his tailbone to the top of his rib cage. He would then stab his axe in between each rib, now on show to the intrigued audience, and meticulously butcher each rib away from the backbone, leaving the sufferer’s internal organs on display. At this point, the Vikings would then, mercilessly, rub salt into the unspeakable wound in the form of a saline stimulant.
They would then, with blood spurting everywhere, spread the ribs out across his back and rip the lungs of the victim out to make it appear as if the victim had a pair of wings spread out, hence the Blood Eagle was manifested it all its gory and glory. The victim had gone from human, to executed slimy and bloody bird.
What makes this worse, apart from the fact that the victim was alive during this, is that it was a traditional Viking belief that if the Victim winsed, screamed or moaned in pain, they wouldn’t be

accepted into Valhalla. So during this agonising sacrifice, you couldn’t even vent the shear pain you were going through. Horrendous.
We’ve designed the featured piece with this awful ritual in mind as a sobering reminder that we don’t have it that bad if we stop and think for a minute.
